Clinical Research Questionnaires

These were developed for clinical research in psychotherapy, but they can be used by any person to gain a better understanding of themselves.

The Cognitive Triad Inventory (CTI) Click Here

The Cognitive Triad Inventory was developed as part of a pilot study to measure change. in psychotherapy. I’m including it here because I think it will be useful in therapy for a therapist and patient to understand the nature of their depressive thoughts. Some patients tend to have mostly negative thoughts about themselves while others may have negative thoughts mostly about the situation they are in. Still others may be very negative about what the future holds for them. By going through the process of filling out this questionnaire the three different domains of negative thinking will be assessed. The person taking it will be given 36 statements which they can agree or disagree with to different degrees, and this is followed by scores and a bar graph that compares them with the original normative sample. To view the original journal article documenting its development, click HERE.

Interpreting the data from the Cognitive Triad Inventory is not straightforward. That is because this inventory was designed to be used in research for depressed patients in treatment. It was intended to be used to measure change in depression–not to assess negative thinking in relation to a general population sample. Therefore the results are best used to compare a person’s negative thinking from one time with another time, such as the beginning of treatment to a later point in treatment.

The Coping Strategies Scales (COSTS) Click Here

I developed the Coping Strategies Scales to measure how people cope when they are in depression. The COSTS was published in 1983 in a peer reviewed journal. The original article can be seen HERE. Any results from it need to be viewed as only one part of an overall evaluation. But given new advances in technology, such as those I have used to create this website, it is now feasible for people to take the COSTS online and to have immediate scores and feedback.

This is not designed to provide therapy; and no data is stored as a result of it.
